Modern car keys have unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, in contrast to older keys. This helps to prevent thieves from taking the key and starting the car.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated, it sends a signal encoded with the four-digit code. The signal is referred to as an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. The transponder is a tiny beige box that is used to transmit the SQUAWK code whenever the air traffic control activates the aircraft. The transponder can be set to the  ON position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.

There are 63 discrete code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However there are reserved codes which prevent the use of specific codes in areas with high traffic or in times of emergency. The discrete code block configuration is dependent on statistical analysis to minimize the chance of two aircraft with identical SQUAWK code being in the same area.

VIN Numbers

In North America, 10th through 17th numbers of the VIN are known as the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS). The tenth and eleventh digits indicate the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The eleventh digit indicates which assembly plant manufactured the vehicle. In addition, the tenth through seventeenth numbers could contain additional information, like options or features that are included in the vehicle.
